Blogging towards literacy

The next step for our team!

Filed under: Our Geelong HS Team — gcasey @ 12:39 pm and

Hi,
The aim of this blog is to share ideas hence develop futher stages to our blogging project.

Stage 1: This was when our team commented on the digital stories blog (http://digitalstories.globalteacher.org.au/).

Stage 2: We are just about finished this stage - we have been developing our own blogs and most of us have had students commenting on our blogs. The work I have seen is fantastic. I have enjoyed reading the blogs and it was great that Diane also got invovled by commenting on Georgies blog (http://gdrijver.globalstudent.org.au/2006/08/14/successful-learning/#comments) - very inspiring for our students.

Could I please get our team members and any other interested staff (some may wish to come on board during term 4) to add any comment ideas to this blog by clicking the comments link.

Questions for our team:
How have you used your blog? (share your ideas with others)
What other ideas do you have for blogging in your classes or with other classes?
Where are you up to with your blogs? Do you know what to do next?
How many blogs do you see yourself needing in the near future?

Other comments on blogging and how it could be used in an educational environment would be appreciated by any interested educator.

  2. Hi Gail.
I have had a look at some of the blogs - and they look great.
I would definitely be interested in the next round of blogging.
This would work well with my year sevens.
    Meghann.

  3. I am about to place another post for Turn The Page and I’m considering setting up another blog for another class.
Blogging is a great opportunity to encourage students to share ideas and learning via a more preferred medium - ICT. Some of the student comments confirm that what we are exposing them to is actually being taken in. Well done team!
My only concern is that I now need to find more time to read communication, either at school or home and time is already a sparce commodity. A teacher’s work is never done!

  4. Hi Gail

Blogging has really taken off with 7CB. It was great to see Diane’s comment there and my student teacher left his thoughts about listening. Our next step blog about the HOM will involve our Art class. We have studied the painter Matisse and how he used persistence in his life. I have asked my students to reflect on some questions and leave a response in the blog.
    Thanks for getting this started.

  5. Hi all
I have really been enjoying blogging with my students. There have been some lows but mostly highs. I have been really happy with the 3, 2, 1 that my students have been using with peer mentoring at http://gcasey.globalstudent.org.au/2006/08/22/our-first-mentoring-session/#comments - this made students think about other students work and got them learning from each other.
I have not been very happy with my level B individual blogs. Each of these students have their own blog page and really haven’t developed it as instructed - next term I will work on this.
I have uploaded some digital stories at the gallery - http://gallery.globalstudent.org.au/ which I am pleased with. I am also going to work with a couple of team members to produce some podcasts with their classes (mp3 voice interviews) - let me know if you are interested. I would like to extend my blogs next term to individual blogs with my level A class. They have a major communication project in term 4 and blogs would fit beautifully with this assessment task.

  7. Hi folks,
I have been using the blogging with my Turn the Page class and they have been reflecting on the novel they are reading in their Literature Circles. They have also reflected on their involvement in the literature circles strategy, which has been really positive.

I plan to continue with this class next term and to also open it up to my other classes. It would be good to get students to comment about various aspects of the course, but to also encourage them to pose questions that could be answered by any other in the class or the wider audience.

Blogging could be used to share ideas or arguments about topical issues before a class organises a formal debate or panel discussion.
    Keep the ideas coming folks!

  8. Hello Gail,

I would like to continue to explore the benefits of using ICT to improve students’ literacy. My year seven learning group have responded positively to this learning opportunity.

In term three, we started to reflect on the benefits of using the Habits of Mind to improve student learning outcomes.

We’re looking forward to learning together.

  9. In term 4 I will continue with the blog related to using HOM to enhance students’ learning. Students are being asked to reflect on the benefits of using HOM.

We also have a student blog. We are going to publish (using PowerPoint slides) students’ poetry with the aim of receiving feedback from other global students.

While we generate the poetry slides we will use the blog to share our viewpoints on a current issue.
